PSG fans run riot in Paris as Champions League hope turns into anger

August 24 – Nearly 150 people were arrested when Paris Saint-Germain fans clashed with riot police on the Champs-Élysées on Sunday night following their team’s 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

The loss ended PSG’s bid to join Marseille as the only French club to win Europe’s elite competition.

The clashes also occurred around the Parc des Princes stadium, where fans had gathered to watch the final on a big screen.

Cars were set on fire and shop windows smashed and in a post on Twitter, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin decried what he called the “savagery of certain delinquents,” indicating “16 law enforcement agents were injured, 12 shops attacked, about fifteen vehicles damaged.”

PSG beamed the match on two giant screens at the Parc des Princes, with 5,000 fans allowed inside in keeping with the maximum allowed for football games in France.

But only minutes before kick-off, hundreds of fans were still queuing and frustrations soon escalated because they could not see the biggest game in their club’s history.
