Down and out Macclesfield lose National League status

September 30 – Macclesfield Town have been expelled from the National League just days before the kick-off of the 2020/2021 season after receiving a court winding-up order.

“Further to the company owning Town… being the subject of a court winding-up order, the board of the National League has passed a resolution pursuant to its Articles of Association that a notice of expulsion be served on the club taking effect on Oct. 12,” said the National League in a statement.

The order ends a rapid slide from grace for Macclesfield, with debts of more than £500,000. In August, the club were relegated from the fourth tier of English football after the EFL won an appeal to deduct a further four points from Macclesfield. Previously, the club had already been docked points in relation to the non-payment of wages.

Macclesfield had been due to open the season at home to Bromley on Saturday before trips to Boreham Wood and Aldershot, but those fixtures have all been postponed following the expulsion with effect from October 12.
