Southgate struggles to control nursery as England’s partying kids break Covid rules again

October 7 – England manager Gareth Southgate has warned his players about their off-field behaviour in the wake of the latest breach of Covid-19 rules.

Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell (both pictured) and Jadon Sancho are the latest players to fall foul of the rules following Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood breaching protocols when on England duty in  Iceland last month.

The trio’s arrival at the England camp for the upcoming international programme has been delayed following reports they attended a party in breach of coronavirus restrictions.

“He (Southgate) reminded us what it means and the expectations of playing for England,” said uncapped Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin who has just been called up to the England squad after a scintillating start to the Premier League campaign.

It has been reported that Chelsea team-mates Abraham and Chilwell, plus Borussia Dortmund’s much-touted England winger Sancho, could miss tomorrow’s friendly against Wales. They were apparently among more than six people at a surprise 23rd birthday party for Abraham.

Speaking to BBC Radio, goalkeeper Nick Pope, who is hoping to win his third cap, echoed Calvert-Lewin’s comments.

“It was more [Southgate’s] reminders of what it means and how it can affect the squad really. How if just one person make a mistake it is not just affecting one person,” said Pope.

“Having that reminder of that responsibility is a great thing because it proves you are not just acting on your own behalf, you’re acting on behalf of the squad and, in reality, the country.”
