D-day looms for Barca’s Bartomeu as no-confidence motion forces January vote

October 8 – January 9 is the date being reported in Spain that could spell the end of the reign of Barcelona supremo Josep Maria Bartomeu in a no confidence vote.

Validated signatures needed to oust Bartomeu are currently over 18,000, well in excess of the the 16,521 required.

At first it was anticipated that the vote could take place in early November but Covid-19 conditions are reported to have pushed the date back by two months – unless Bartomeu decides to throw in the towel beforehand.

Club statutes state a referendum must be held within three months. Bartomeu has been heavily criticised by many of the club’s members and now faces a battle to keep his job despite Lionel Messi’s u-turn decision to stay.

“Objective accomplished,” wrote presidential candidate Jordi Farre on social media with regard to the signatures from Barca members.

“I want to thank all the partners who have signed. We had the idea that it would be achieved.  I think there will be no referendum and that Bartomeu and his board will resign.”
