Spanish civil war rages over LaLiga’s Monday and Friday night games

October 21 – The ongoing row between the Spanish league and the national federation over which days domestic matches can take place in the country is back in the news after  a Madrid court rejected the latest request by La Liga to play on Mondays and Fridays.

La Liga expressed its “absolute disagreement ” with the decision and threatened to maintain “dates already scheduled”, throwing into focus the Elche-Valence fixture due this Friday and Levante-Celta Vigo three days later.

For its part, the national federation (RFEF)  has not yet commented but sources quoted by Spanish media say they will steadfastly oppose Friday and Monday games.

The two parties have long argued over whether matches can be played on Fridays and Mondays, with each side getting favourable rulings from different courts. The league argues that those days are important for its broadcasters who pay television rights fees.

A peace deal of sorts was made when the federation made concessions at the end of last season because of the coronavirus pandemic, allowing the league to schedule matches on those days to guarantee that the season could finish in time.

The federation  warned, however, that it maintained its general stance against playing on Mondays and Fridays.
