Joy for Wales and Czechs as Israel ruin Scots’ Nations League progression

November 19 – Wales secured promotion to the top tier of the Nations League with a 3-1 win over 10-man Finland in Cardiff on Wednesday and virtually guaranteed themselves a 2022 World Cup play-off spot.

Finland needed to win to deprive Wales of top spot in Group B4, but they were forced to play with 10 men for 78 minutes after Jere Uronen was sent off. They were already  without suspended skipper Tim Sparv and striker Joel Pohjanpalo, who broke an ankle during Sunday’s 2-1 win in Bulgaria.

Wales are now unbeaten in  a record 10 competitive matches but there was less good news for Scotland who missed out on Nations League promotion after going down to a 1-0 defeat in Israel.

Manor Solomon scored on the counter-attack a minute before half-time as Israel gained partial revenge for their Euro 2020 playoff semi-final defeat. In doing so they allowed the Czech Republic to leapfrog Scotland and take top spot in Group B2 following their 2-0 win over arch-rivals Slovakia.
