Barca go live on Twitch with LaLiga match commentary and esports focus

December 16 – Spanish giants Barcelona today launch their official channel on live streaming behemoth Twitch, opening with commentary of the club’s LaLiga match against Real Sociedad.

The match coverage will include pre-match, live commentary and post-match follow-up. Barcelona said that “these programs will cover the matches of the first team and will be among the main content broadcast on the service.” The broadcast does not have rights to live match action.

Twitch has been building out its sports portfolio having built its base and reputation around video games and esports. It recently launched a dedicated sports channel, /Twitchsports, and that platform boasts that every second 2 million people connect to Twitch live with an average of 26.5 million people visit the platform daily.

Barcelona also has big digital numbers and leads the world’s football clubs with 370 million social media followers and 1.37 billion interactions during the 2019/20 season.

The Barca channel will deliver various entertainment programming, including exclusive live broadcasts with a focus on the club’s new esports division that was created a year ago and competes in eFootball PES, Rocket League and Hearthstone.

Barca said the channels “ will use the service’s features to create innovative content to encourage fans to participate.”

“FC Barcelona will work with the two current content creators, but also with the hosts of the live broadcasts on social networks, and will integrate new partners who will produce content specially adapted for the Twitch community,” said a press release.
