Messi and Ronaldo still make the cut in UEFA fan vote for 2020 teams of the year

January 20 – Five Bayern Munich players and seven Olympique Lyonnais stars dominate the UEFA.com men’s and women’s teams of the year, as voted for by almost 6 million fans on the website.

Votes have been cast over the past month with teams selected from a list of 50 elite players.

Three new names make it into the men’s team – Joshua Kimmich, and Canadian Alfonso Davies (both Bayern), and Thiago Alcántara who has joined Liverpool from Bayern.

The 11 players making the final selection represent seven clubs and nine countries, with Germany and Spain both being represented by two players.

Remarkably old perennials Cristiani Ronaldo and Lionel Messi again make the final XI. Ronaldo was selected for the 15th time, and has been in every Fans’ Team of the Year since 2007. Messi features for the 12th time.

This is the first time that fans have been asked to vote on UEFA.com inaugural for their Women’s Team of the Year. Six of the selections played in Olympique Lyonnais’ UEFA Women’s Champions League title-winning squad. The selected players represent six different clubs and seven countries, with France (five players) being the most represented nation.

Fans who voted will now be entered into a prize draw to win a VIP trip to both the men’s and women’s Champions League finals.
