February 8 – Fans in Argentina and Uruguay are mourning the apparent suicide at just 30 of forward Santiago Garcia, nicknamed ‘Morro’, who played for Godoy Cruz.
The Uruguayan striker, an under-20 international, was found dead in his home in the western city of Mendoza, the Argentine top flight club announced, amid reports he was receiving psychiatric treatment for depression.
“You were a hero, you were a goal scorer, you were a friend and family, you were everything a person wants to be with a ball. Now, you’re going to be eternal and infinite for all of us. Thank you very much for so much Morro, thank you for so many joys to the Tombino people. Rest in peace.” Godoy Cruz said on Twitter.
Garcia began his career at Uruguayan giants Nacional in 2008 and also had spells at Brazil’s Athletico Paranaense, Turkey’s Kasimpasa and Uruguay’s River Plate before joining Godoy Cruz in 2016. He scored 49 goals in 115 matches for the Argentine club.
Following news of his death, South American media posted some unsavoury comments by the president of Atletico Paranaense.
Mario Celso Petraglia is reported to have suggested on Twitter than Garcia was “always problematic” and that he had “no talent,” comments that are bound to upset his legions of fans in both Argentina and his homeland.
