UEFA sticks to 12-city plan despite report that Bilbao, Dublin and Glasgow face the axe

March 4 – UEFA has sought to shoot down an agency report that it is considering ditching three of the 12 cities being used for this summer’s delayed Euro 2020.

“No other plans are being pursued,” UEFA said in the briefest of statements after the Associated Press said it had been told that Bilbao, Dublin and Glasgow could be scrapped.

UEFA is keen for at least a limited of fans to attend games rather than play in empty stadiums and have set an April 5 deadline to received plans from host countries.

According to AP citing unnamed sources, UEFA is willing to strip cities of hosting rights if they cannot  guarantee a significant number of spectators based on an anticipated reduction of the coronavirus pandemic by June 11 when the tournament is due to start in Rome.

The British government hopes to allow 10,000 fans to attend games by May. England is due to host seven Euro games at Wembley including the two semis and the final.

Scotland is due to stage four matches but has had stricter restrictions than in England, while according to AP,  UEFA has yet to receive a positive update from Irish authorities .
