FIFPro and KPMG combine for data platform monitoring player workloads

May 7 – Players’ union FIFPro as part of a three-year co-operation with the KPMG Football benchmark team, has launched a Player Workload Monitoring (PWM) platform.

Developed and operated jointly by FIFPRO and KPMG, the platform will monitor the workload of professional footballers.

“The player-centric platform addresses the growing need for aggregated player workload data by delivering information about the playing time, travel log and recovery periods of a sample of male and female footballers,” said KPMG.

The digital tool is targeted at helping football industry stakeholders plan “the next generation of national and international competitions so that they are sustainable, integrated, and benefit footballers and the game as a whole.” As the platform develops the data updates will allow player and competition comparisons as well as changes between seasons.

Timed with the launch of the platform, a ‘flash’ report has been published providing mid-season analysis on players’ workload and match scheduling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The report reveals that a large number of players do not get the recommended five days of rest before most of their matches. The study covers a representative group of 265 male footballers from 43 domestic leagues across six confederations and includes club and national team matches,” said KPMG.
