Schalke sells its esports team for €26.5m

July 1 – German football club Schalke 04 has completed the sale of its esports team, League of Legends European Championship licence, to Swiss organisation Team BDS for €26.5 million.

The sale represents brisk business for the Gelsenkirchen club, which acquired the league spot for just €8 million two years ago. Schalke had been looking to sell the spot as early as February, but the sale was only finalised after a five-month selection process led by Riot Games.

“We are thrilled to finally be able to participate in such a challenging and exciting competition,” said head of strategy for Team BDS Alexandre Lopez. “This really is the next step for BDS and we hope to feature among the best in League of Legends “We are grateful towards Riot Games and FC Schalke 04 for placing their trust in our team, and we hope to continue FC Schalke 04’s work in developing esports as a discipline of its own.”

Team BDS is a Geneva-based esports organisation, which was founded in 2018.They have excelled at the highest European levels of Rocket League and Rainbow Six Siege esports.
