Motherwell fans raise cash to buy season tickets for unemployed and low income workers

July 9 – Fans of Scottish Premiership side Motherwell have raised £60,000 to buy season tickets for unemployed and low-income families this season, with the club matching that figure.

The scheme was launched in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. In May, reports suggested that unemployment in North Lanarkshire rose by 71% because of the global health crisis. In response to the fundraising by fans, the club said it would match the final figure.

“We have pledged to match anything raised, so that’s well over £100k in season tickets for unemployed and low-income families,” said Motherwell chief executive Alan Burrows.

The club has 4,500 season ticket holders and the raised money would allow 500 families to attend matches at Fir Park.

Burrows said: “It says everything about the compassion and generosity of our supporters that they’ve raised such a significant amount of money for this initiative. Our club exists to do everything in our power to benefit people in our local community, whether they are Motherwell supporters or not.”

Motherwell already confirmed that supporters who purchased season tickets for 2020/21 will receive a free 2021/22 season ticket.
