LaLiga and Microsoft launch Beyond Stands enhanced data portal for fans

October 7 – LaLiga and Microsoft have combined to launch a new football statistics portal, Beyond Stats, that they say will revolutionise the fan experience with deeper insights into game play.

The Beyond Stats portal will be a part of LaLiga’s global fan engagement strategy and offers free content and matchday analysis for each Laliga Santander matchday in both English and Spanish. The Beyond Stats will also extend to supplying TV with new sets of on-screen data by highlight metrics throughout the game.

The system introduces 21 new sets of metrics, with data gathered from 19 sets of fixed perimeter cameras for optical tracking at every LaLiga game. They follow the ball, the players and the referee recording their positioning at the rate 25 times per second, creating over 3.5 million statistics per game.

That data is then processed for tracking (distance, number of sprints, speed) and ‘eventing’ (key tactical changes, shots, crosses, bookings, corners, offsides). That information is then processed via machine learning and artificial intelligence processes to create a visualization of the metrics which fans can access.

These include average number of players in a possession, moves that end in a shot on goal, success rate of a first pass, speed of ball recovery and so on.

Beyond Stats uses the Mediacoach platform, which is part of the Laliga Tech solutions portfolio and powered byMicrosoft Azure artificial intelligence and machine learning technology.

“The Beyond Stats portal offers us a direct link with supporters and represents a clear step towards a new entertainmentera: the interactive integration of the digital experience within the audiovisual environment,” said Miguel  Angel  Leal, director  general  of Laliga Tech.

“Mediacoach is a football analysis platform that has been constantly evolving over the past decade and, thanks to thepossibilities offered by Microsoft Azure, we’re now able to offer fans a set of metrics that were previously only available to those directly involved in the industry, such as the clubs themselves. Now, fans can evolve from being passive spectators to active participants in the game.”
