AFC names teams for U17 and U20 Women’s World Cups, Asian Cup 2022 on track

October 15 – With the global pandemic having decimated the global Women’s competition calendar in 2020 and seen the cancellation of both FIFA U17 and U20 age-group tournaments, the AFC Women’s Football Committee has rolled forward teams from its 2019 competitions to represent the confederation in the rearranged 2022 finals.

That means Japan and DPR Korea join hosts India as the AFC’s three representatives in the upcoming FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup scheduled to take place from October 11 to 30, 2022 (they qualified via AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019).

Japan, DPR Korea and Korea Republic will be Asia’s three sides at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2022, which will be held from August 10 to 28. They qualified via the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019.

Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 on track

While there was a practicality around selection of the teams to represent the AFC in the upcoming age-group world cups, the AFC Women’s Football Committee also heard reports of the progress of their own Women’ Asian Cup India 2022, thanking Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Palestine, for staging the centralised qualification groups last month and wishing Bahrain and Kyrgyz Republic good luck for the completion of the two remaining groups.

Japan, Australia, China and host India have automatically qualified for the finals.  Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Korea Republic, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam won their places at the final in the September international window. There are two further teams to qualify from the last two group stages

The competition is scheduled to take place from January 20 to February 6 next year.
