Italian clubs probed for over-inflating transfer fees; Juve top list of most suspicious deals

October 28 – Italian prosecutors have opened a probe into dozens of transfers involving Serie A clubs.

Local media reports have said the federal prosecutor is investigating the possibility of inflated valuations to help clubs balance their books. Investigators are focusing on 62 transfers that took place between 2019 and 2021, with a particular focus on Juventus’ transfer activity.

The club has 42 transfers on the list. One of the deals reportedly under scrutiny is the swap involving Miralem Pjanic and FC Barcelona’s Arthur Melo.

In 2020, the Brazilian midfielder headed to Juventus in a deal worth €72 million, plus €10 million in variables. Meanwhile, Pjanic went in the other direction in a deal worth €60 million, plus a maximum of €5 million in variables. The swap raised a lot of eyebrows at the time.

Last month, the Turin-based club revealed that the Italian market regulator CONSOB is looking into revenue they received from player trading activity.

Last year, Serie B was engulfed in a similar scandal and ultimately Cesena and Chievo Verona were docked points. Both clubs later went into bankruptcy.
