Tweets down but followers up as Chelsea overtake Arsenal in return to second spot

Twiter spat

March 28 – In a week of international fixtures that has seen growth in the number of tweets made by Premier League clubs down by more than 50% on the previous week, growth in followers has increased by 11.5%.

It appears Premier League fans are missing their club fix and fixtures, to a very significantly higher level than the international calendar can compensate for.

Manchester United still had greatest increase in new followers this week at 76,800, but the week is notable for Chelsea’s resurgence to second position in the growth table.

The Londoners last occupied this weekly position more than 18 months ago, but as the club lost form and Jose Mourniho’s toxic behaviour lost its appeal, so the club dropped from contention at the very top of the Twitter rankings. Under new manager Antonio Conte there has been a gradual but sustained revival, first climbing above Liverpool and now over Arsenal.

And it is a significant jump over Arsenal, with the west Londoners adding 54,900 new follers against the North Londoners’ 44,900.

East Londoners West Ham were the chirpiest premier league club with 153 tweets, followed by Everton with 138 tweets.

At the bottom of the tables Middlesbrough grew by just 400 followers – a record weekly low in terms of growth – while Leicester City seem to have run out of breath, tweeting just 50 times.
