June 7 – Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buenain has been elected as the president of the Qatar Football Association (QFA) for a four year-term.
Al-Buenain will serve until 2027 and succeeds Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani, a member of the FIFA Council and chairman of the Qatar Stars League, who became QFA president in 2005.
Sheikh Hamad said: “After Jassim al-Buenain learned about my non-candidacy in the elections, he expressed his desire to run, and he was appointed as the Vice President of the Qatar Football Association on February 22, 2023. He was also entrusted by the QFA to manage the Qatar Stars League on February 27, 2023. Since then, I have decided that my brother al-Buenain should take on a greater leadership role within the association. Therefore, he has prepared well in the past period, and I have been by his side in the past, and I will continue to be so in the future.
Under the presidency of Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani, Qatar won the 2014 U-19 Asian Championship as well as the 2019 Asian Cup.
He became a board member of the Supreme Committee for Legacy and Delivery as Qatar delivered the 2022 World Cup. His successor has vowed that Qatari football will seek to compete at the highest level and stressed unity among all the stakeholders as essential.
Al-Buenain serves on Qatar’s national Olympic committee as well as the Olympic Council of Asia.
