Germany’s Bundesliga to expand GLT technology to its second tier

December 12 – Germany’s Bundesliga 2 is set to embrace goal-line technology in the 2024-25 season for the first time.

During the recent DFL Members Assembly, the Bundesliga 2 Sub-Assembly voted unanimously to incorporate the technology into the German second tier. Goal-line technology has been operating in the top tier of the Bundesliga since the 2015-16 season, and functions by employing seven goal-line cameras directed at each penalty area.

The DFL said the decision aligns with recommendations from the Football Commission and the unanimous vote of the DFL e.V. Executive Committee, solidifying a strategic shift for the league’s technological advancements.

This rapid system provides referees with an instantaneous signal, confirming whether the entire ball has crossed the goal line, ensuring swift resolution in goal-scoring situations and maintaining game momentum without interruptions.

GLT has been a mainstay in the top European leagues, and unlike its technological cousin VAR, is rarely in the public eye for being unreliable and inconsistent.

On top of aiding the on-field referee, the technology presents added benefits by enhancing the role of video assistants in the German second division, delivering supplementary perspectives to officials in the Video Assist Centre for assessing potential penalty area infringements.

The delivery of the technology will be handled by DFL subsidiary Sportec Solutions.
