December 1 – The Vancouver Whitecaps booked their spot in MLS Cup with a composed 3–1 win over San Diego, setting up a final that the executives at Major League Soccer could only dream about as Inter Miami, led by Argentine Lionel Messi, will face off against a side built around Germany’s Thomas Müller in a repeat of the 2014 World Cup Final, which Müller’s Germany won.
In Southern California, Vancouver struck early. In the 8th minute, Andrés Cubas and Ali Ahmed combined to open San Diego FC’s up for Brian White to finish, and three minutes later, the lead doubled chaotically as Pablo Sisniega found the back of his own net. White completed his brace, adding a second in first-half stoppage time.
San Diego turned to El Tri legend, Chucky Lozano, at halftime, and in the 60th minute he gave the home team some hope, however, that was extinguished in the 79th minute when Sisniega saw red to complete a miserable evening.
Hours later, Inter Miami made their own statement in Fort Lauderdale with a 5–1 thrashing over New York City FC. Tadeo Allende scored twice in the opening 23 minutes on his way to a hat trick. Justin Haak briefly reignited hope for NYCFC, but Miami pulled away again after halftime. Mateo Silvetti made it 3–1 from a Messi assist, then Telasco Segovia stretched the lead further, with Allende completing his night late on.
As Miami lifted the Eastern Conference trophy, attention shifted toward next weekend’s final and whether the showdown would be framed as Messi versus Müller. Müller pushed back on that idea.
“It’s not about Messi against Thomas Müller; it’s Miami against the Whitecaps,” he said afterward, wearing a conference champions beanie he joked made him look like a hockey player. “Maybe they rely a little bit more on him than we do on me, because we are such a good group.”
Still, he understood the spotlight.
“The nice thing is not only playing against the greatest player in our game, but when you have a pairing like this, more people are watching. And if more people are watching, the value for you, your team, and your franchise is way bigger.”
