Draw for Concacaf Champions League last 16 gives no easy routes for Mexico’s big clubs

February 11 – The draw for the last 16 of the Concacaf Champions League has pitched Mexican giants Club America against last season’s breakthrough team CD Olimpia from Honduras, who made it to the semi-finals last December.

MLS agrees pay deal with players’ union to 2027 and stays on course for April kick off

February 9 – Major League Soccer (MLS) and the players union (MLSPA) have voted to ratify the amended collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that will govern their relation until 2027, avoiding a potential lockout or strike before the new season kicks off.

Concacaf reformats its Champions League with expanded teams, groups and split calendar

February 4 – Concacaf is completely revamping its 16-team Champions League into a 50-team competition that will begin with a 2023/24 season and see its three regions open up group stages before going into the 16-team knock-out rounds.

Chicago’s second pro team to take root in Chicago Fire’s old Bridgewater stadium

January 28 – Chicago’s second professional men’s team, who will begin play in the third tier NISA for the upcoming 2021-22 season, will base themselves at the SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.

Montreal says its new French club name will have more impact

January 20 – Canada’s MLS franchise based in Montreal will start the 2021 season with a new name, changing its 28-year moniker from Montreal Impact Club de Foot Montréal (CF Montréal).

Neville confirms move to Inter Miami to join Beckham’s MLS project

January 19 – Twenty-four hours after his contract as manager of England’s women was prematurely ended in anticipation of a move to the United States, Phil Neville has duly been named head coach of Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer club part-owned by David Beckham.

Concacaf to hold Men’s Olympic qualifiers in Guadalajara in March

January 15 – Guadalajara in Mexico will host the Concacaf men’s qualifiers for the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games. The eight U-23 teams will play March 18-30 to qualify two teams for Japan.
