Singapore and Vietnam gear up for 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup

April 4 – Singapore and Vietnam will be co-hosts for the AFF Suzuki Cup group stages in 2014, the region’s premier competition held every two years.

The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) council announced the decision following meetings in Malaysia. Both countries have hosted the competition three times. Singapore are current holders of the AFF Suzuki Cup, having won for a record fourth time by beating Thailand 3-2 on aggregate in the two-legged final last December

Singapore will host matches in the new 55,000-seat National Stadium which is due to open in the first half of next year and will be part of the Singapore Sports Hub complex.

Singapore previously hosted the ASEAN Football Championship in 1996, 2002 and 2007.

The group in Vietnam will be played at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi. Vietnam staged the event in 1998, 2004 and 2010. They have won the title once, in 2008.

The format and dates of the 2014 tournament are still to be finalised. The competition, which feature eight southeast Asia teams, is split into two groups, with the top two from each group playing home and away leg semi-finals and finals.

At the AFF Awards in Pahang, Malaysia, the Singapore national football team was named the Men’s National Team of the Year. Former coach Raddy Avramovic was named Coach of the Year, and Shahril Ishak took the Player of the Year award.
