May 17 – The US will host the CONCACAF Women’s Championship 2014 this Autumn. The championships also serve as the finals of the Confederation’s qualifying tournament for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

Eight qualifying nations will compete for the championships, three will qualify for the 2015 Women’s World Cup with a fourth winning a play off place against a South American nation. Canada already have a place at the first 24-nation FIFA Women’s World Cup as hosts.

A record 31 nations from across CONCACAF have expressed interest in participating in the preliminary qualifying process. The Caribbean qualifiers start later this month with 20 teams competing for the naugural CFU Women’s Caribbean Cup.

Venues in the US and exact dates of championship will be announced in the near future, said CONCACAF.

“Given our region’s historically outstanding results in women’s competition, CONCACAF is proud to call itself the world’s home of women’s football,” said COONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb.
”The number of teams set to participate in our regional qualification process demonstrates the growth of the women’s game across the Confederation – especially in the Caribbean and Central America,” said Webb.

Webb went on to commend Canada and its preparation for the two FIFA World Cup events it will host this year and next. “We know Canada is prepared to put on a great show, both later this year for the FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup and next year for the World Cup. Taking into account also the successful FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup recently completed Costa Rica, there’s no doubt that CONCACAF has earned the title of ‘Women’s World Cup Central.”
