June 22 – Hungary are the latest country to be sanctioned by UEFA over crowd trouble at Euro 2016 incurring a €65,000 fine following the disorder during their encounter with Iceland.
A series of disturbances occurred towards the end of Saturday’s Group F game in Marseille, in which a late Birkir Saevarsson own goal saw Hungary earn a 1-1 draw. The charge against the Hungarian federation relates to crowd disturbances, setting off of fireworks and throwing of objects.
A UEFA statement said: “The independent UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) met today in Paris to deal with the disciplinary proceedings opened against the Hungarian Football Federation following the incidents which occurred at the Iceland-Hungary match played on 18 June in Marseille.
“Charges relating to crowd disturbances, setting off of fireworks and throwing of objects had been brought against the MLSZ, and the CEDB decided to impose the following sanction: a fine of €65,000.”
Eight countries, a third of those taking part, have now been charged by UEFA over crowd disturbances with Albania, Romania, Turkey, Belgium, and Portugal also facing disciplinary action.
Croatia were previously fined €100,000 euros and Russia €150,000 plus a suspended qualification though they have now exited the competition on the field.
