Esports busts $1.5bn mark 2017 with new leagues to drive growth to $2.3bn by 2023

February 2 – Revenue for the esports industry hit $1.5 billion in 2017 and is predicted to grow by 26% in 2023 to more than $2.3 billion.

2017 was a breakout year for the business of esports with revenue in 2016 hitting $900 million and SuperData predictions for 2017 originally set at $1.1 billion. The hyper growth rate that saw revenue reach $1.5 billion is expected to tail off but still continue at around 12% per year.

SuperData points to the setting up of new leagues – a space where football gaming initiatives are starting to take shape – will be a driver of esports revenue growth.

Esports is now not just about participation but according to SuperData gamers watched over 2.1 billion hours worth of content, from both Twitch and YouTube, between April and October 2017.

The Twitch platform has the lead in terms of viewing with 20% while Youtube has 11%.
