They don’t like Mondays. Dortmund’s yellow wall cracks over TV match scheduling

Dortmund fans

February 27 – German fans have staged more protests about top-flight matches being staged on Monday nights when some 25,000 Borussia Dortmund supporters stayed away from this week’s fixture against Augsburg.

Dortmund’s gate is normally around 80,000 but 54,300 turned up for what was the second televised Monday match of a new broadcasting deal.

The absentees were perhaps also influenced by freezing temperatures but before kick-off, stadium announcer Norbert Dickel was cheered by the crowd as he said: “We respect the opinion of those who have chosen to stay at home. We are also against a further stretching out of the weekend and will be raising this when the next TV deal is discussed.”

A banner was also on display that read: ‘For fairer kick-off times for fans – no to Monday games’.
