NWSL players get salary top-up in crypto with Voyager deal

December 15 – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) players in the US will be getting a wage boost in the form of cryptocurrency following the announcement of a multi-year sponsorship with Voyager Digital.

The cryptocurrency payments will be made on top of players’ current wages and to each rostered player. Each player will receive an equal portion of the Voyager-established NWSL players’ fund. No value was given for the total sponsorship or how much each player will receive.

Voyager was only founded in 2018 but the cryptocurrency platform has grown rapidly in the US and is part of the publicly traded Voyager Digital Ltd business. The platform trades in 65 different crypto assets and is reporting returns of up to 12% annually on more than 30 cryptocurrencies.

Voyager will be designated the NWSL’s cryptocurrency brokerage partner. As well as depositing cryptocurrency into players’ accounts on the Voyager app, Voyager will also provide financial education on crypto.

One player from each of the 12 NWSL teams will be nominated as a Voyager Player Ambassador roster. Their task “will include attending educational appearances, creating content, and working with their teammates to manage their Voyager accounts better,” said a Voyager press statement.

“Voyager’s investment in the league is especially innovative because we’ve collectively designed the partnership to include direct financial resources for every one of our players, as well as education on the revolutionary changes underway in digital assets,” said Marla Messing, NWSL interim CEO.

Voyager Digital will join Nike, Twitch, Verizon, Budweiser, CBS, Deloitte, Mastercard, Nationwide, and Ally as official partners of the NWSL.

“We are extremely proud to partner with the NWSL, specifically to help the league grow and provide its players with crypto education and direct financial support, paid in crypto,” said Steve Ehrlich, CEO, and co-founder of Voyager. “We believe strongly in the future of these players and this league, and we can’t wait to get started.”
