Adidas pack their bags in Russia and drop RFU deal

March 2 – Adidas has suspended its long-term kit partnership with the Russian Football Union (RFU) that first began in 2008.

The partnership was renewed after the Russia 2018 World Cup and was set to expire after the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Russia had been in the final elimination qualifiers for Qatar 2022 until they were suspended from all international competition on Monday.

Under the deal Adidas had provided all Russia’s teams with kit and had expanded the federation’s replica kit sales in the retail market.

Manchester United at the end of last week cancelled their £40 million sponsorship with Russian airline Aeroflot, while Schalke 04 have also suspended their main sponsorship with Russian energy giant Gazprom that saw the company logo on the front of the club’s shirt.

As well as banning Russian teams from competing in their competitions, UEFA has also ended its sponsorship with Gazprom.
