Champions League needs to bring a bigger show, says Al-Khelaifi

April 5 – Paris Saint-Germain boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi has called on UEFA to jazz up the Champions League final to make it more like the Super Bowl.

Head of the European Club Association, Al-Khelaifi wants the Champions League to become more of a spectacle, including a glittering opening ceremony.

The Champions League final far exceeds the Super Bowl in terms of global viewing audience but Al-Khelaifi believes the climax to the NFL season is better packaged when it comes to entertainment.

“I can’t understand how the Super Bowl can feel bigger than the Champions League final,” Al Khaleifi told The Athletic. “The (Champions League) final should be bigger.”

“The Super Bowl, and the US generally, have this mindset, creativity and entertainment. That’s what I have suggested, to have an opening ceremony to the Champions League, to have one match on the opening night where the winners take on a big team — maybe it is not a good idea, but at least let’s challenge the status quo. Each match needs to be an event and entertainment.”
