Met police swoop on Premier League player over holiday rape allegation

July 5 – An English Premier League footballer has reportedly been arrested in London on suspicion of rape.

The player, who is 29 but cannot be named for legal reasons, was being questioned by police over an alleged attack which was said to have taken place in June, according to the Daily Telegraph who claimed the alleged perpetrator is “internationally renowned”.

Reports said the player, apparently due to play for his country at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, was arrested in north London – where both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur play — and taken into custody after accusations of rape during a holiday in the Mediterranean.

“On 4 July, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. “Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”

The Sun newspaper is reporting that the arrest took place at 3am on Monday after six police cars arrived at the player’s mansion in an early morning swoop. The footballer was said to have been quizzed by detectives for at least 15 hours.
