Trump rant blames Rapinoe and Joe Biden for exit of US team from WWC2023

August 8 – In a preposterous intervention even by his own eccentric standards, former US president Donald Trump has blamed the USA team’s shock exit from the Women’s World Cup on star player Megan Rapinoe and the country’s situation under his nemesis, Joe Biden.

Hours after the defending champions crashed out on penalties to Sweden in the last 16, Trump seized the opportunity to say the defeat was as a result of the country’s “woke” culture under the Biden regime.

Rapinoe has had a long-standing feud with Trump and on his social media platform, he wrote: “The ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden.

“Many of our players were openly hostile to America – No other country behaved in such a manner, or even close. WOKE EQUALS FAILURE. Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA.”

Trump’s post, which of course made no logical sense, specifically called out Rapinoe for missing her penalty in Sunday’s shootout. While the veteran superstar was not the only player to miss, she has a contentious history with the former president.

Ahead of the last Women’s World Cup in 2019, Rapinoe famously said she would not “go to the f***ing White House” if the team won the tournament.

After Trump’s latest outburst, Rapinoe said she stood by her comments, criticising the Trump administration as one that didn’t “fight for the same things that we fight for.”

She is well-known for her work on social issues, ranging from LGBTQ+ rights to racial inequality to gender and pay equity. In 2022, Biden awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States.
