Argentina’s £105m Fernandez scotches rumours of Chelsea departure

February 14 – Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez has dismissed rumours of a desire to move away from West London, quashing speculation about a potential summer exit.

Reports were that the Argentine World Cup winner was contemplating an exit merely 18 months after his arrival for a record-breaking £105 million switch from Benfica.

The recent reports seem to have sparked improved performances from the 23-year-old, with his most outstanding displays in a Chelsea shirt emerging against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace. At Villa Park, Fernandez scored a stunning free-kick.

He then sealed a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace with a stoppage-time clincher on Monday. Addressing the speculations post-match, Fernandez refuted any talk of departure, emphasising his contentment at Chelsea and dismissing the social media rumours as baseless.

“I don’t want to leave Chelsea,” Fernandez said. “I am very good here with my teammates and coaching staff from the first day I arrived. The people at the club are treating me very well, I’m grateful for that.”

“I will continue here until they want me to. I don’t know where those rumours came from, they had spoken on social networks. I came out to totally deny that.”

Chelsea sit 10th in the Premier League table after 24 games, with things unlikely to improve as they visit Manchester City this weekend.
