August 8 – Turkish giants Fenerbahçe have made a clear and emphatic statement about the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Ahead of their Champions League match against Feyenoord in the Netherlands, Jose Mourinho’s players wore black shirts and a message against Israel’s actions during their warm-up.
Fenerbahçe’s management called for an immediate end to the hostilities, and ther players wore shirts with the words “Stop Crimes Against Humanity” and “Enough Is Enough”.
At the same time, the club issued an official statement, which was published on the official channels of the Istanbul team.
The Turkish club said: “We don’t just wear jerseys; we wear consciences. We do not remain silent, we do not ignore. Wherever humanity is wounded, we take a stand. Because humanity loses when it remains silent.”
In the end, Fenerbahçe lost 2-1 to Feyenoord in Rotterdam. The return leg is in a week in Istanbul, and the Turkish club are likely to protest again.
