October 14 – Former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere has been appointed manager of League One side Luton Town.
At the ripe old age of 33, Wilshere steps into his first full-time managerial job with a club that has endured back-to-back relegations. He replaces Matt Bloomfield, dismissed after less than a year in charge at Kenilworth Road, with the club sitting mid-table and still searching for the identity that propelled them to the heights of the Premier League.
“It feels like a full-circle moment for me,” Wilshere told the club website. “I was eight when I first came to Luton as a boy, so I guess you could say it’s fate that my first full-time managerial position is at this club. This club’s story inspires me. Built on belief, unity, and hard work.”
After retiring in 2022 due to a never-ending succession of injuries, Wilshere began his coaching journey with Arsenal’s under-18s and had a brief spell on Norwich City’s first-team staff. Those close to him describe a thoughtful, meticulous coach who’s learned from the game’s harsher lessons.
Luton have backed him with a three-year deal and installed Chris Powell as his assistant. Their first test comes this Saturday at Kenilworth Road against Mansfield Town.
