October 16 – Lionel Messi is stepping into the multi-billion-dollar U.S. youth soccer market. Argentina’s icon has announced the first edition of the Messi Cup, an international Under-16 tournament set for December 9–14 in South Florida, featuring some of the biggest clubs in world football.
The competition, organised by Messi’s production company 525 Rosario, is set to include a who’s who of top teams with Inter Miami, Barcelona, Manchester City, River Plate, Inter Milan, Newell’s Old Boys, Atlético Madrid, and Chelsea, playing a total of 18 matches at Chase Stadium.
“Thrilled to finally share this with you,” Messi wrote on Instagram. “This December, Miami will host a very special youth football tournament featuring some of the top clubs from around the world. The future of the game will be on full display, and it’s more than just matches…this is about the next generation.”
With youth soccer participation booming in the United States and private investors pouring money into academies, tournaments, and streaming platforms, the Messi Cup is another avenue for publicity and revenue.
525 Rosario describes the Messi Cup as “a digitally driven platform that fuses sport, culture, and innovation.” CEO Tim Pastore added, “The Messi Cup is the meeting point between the football of today and the players of tomorrow. It’s an opportunity to celebrate talent, culture, and community, creating legacies and bonds that will endure beyond the field of play.”
With Messi winding down his legendary career, reshaping the future of youth football seems next on his list of goals.
