January 9 – In a powerful tribute to one of football’s most enduring icons, CSKA has officially announced that its future youth academy will be named the Dimitar Penev Academy.
The decision comes just days after the passing of the legendary coach and player, aiming to immortalise a man who embodied the Army spirit and a winning mentality for nearly eight decades.
Penev was more than just a coach; he was the primary architect of Bulgarian football’s greatest successes. The club stated that the academy bears his name because Penev represents the ultimate skill and faith in discovering and refining raw talent.
He is famously credited with paving the way for Bulgaria’s ‘Golden Generation’, including some of the most legendary figures to ever wear the CSKA jersey.
The Dimitar Penev Academy is currently in the design and construction phase. According to the club’s official statement, the naming is not just a symbolic gesture but a promise to future generations.
The ‘Strategist’s’ legacy is intended to inspire young players to reach the heights of both Bulgarian and world football.
Once completed, the facility will provide a state-of-the-art environment for youth development.
“Dimitar Penev was a symbol of the values CSKA has upheld for 80 years. We believe his testament will be the necessary motivation for our future champions to pursue the summit of the sport,” the club said.
