February 27 – Three goals in the first 12 minutes ended any lingering hope of Trinidad and Tobago’s Defence Force had of overcoming an already steep five-goal deficit against Philadelphia Union and qualify for the last 16 of the Champions Cup.
The Union went on to hammer in a further four goals at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, to run out 7-0 winners, and 12-0 winners on aggregate.
In the 7th minute Geiner Martínez hit a left-footed curler for his first goal for the club. Jovan Lukic doubled the lead from the penalty spot on 10 minutes. Stas Korzeniowski added the third on 12 minutes, finishing off a majestic passing sequence.
Korzeniowski scored his second of the game in the 48th minute with a shot from close range to make it 4-0.
There was no respite for Defence Force. In the 53rd minute Ben Bender made it 5-0, socring on his debut.
Cavan Sullivan rounded out the win for the reigning MLS Supporters’ Shield winners, with goals in the 76th and the 88thminutes.
The Union head in to the Round of 16, where they will meet Mexican giants Club América in March.
