Paulinho hat-trick gives Toluca 2-goal lead for return leg at LA Galaxy

April 8 – Toluca were magnificent. This was a performance of genuine quality from the Mexican side, disciplined in the first half, ruthless on the counter, and composed enough to absorb a Galaxy comeback that briefly threatened to change the night.

In the end, the Diablos Rojos were simply too good, winning the first leg 4–2.

Toluca set the tone from the first whistle. Helinho tested from range inside six minutes. Castro dragged one wide in the eighth. The intent was obvious.

The opener came in the 12th minute, and it was a proper finish. Federico Pereira slid Castro through with a perfectly weighted pass, and the midfielder buried it into the bottom left corner. JT Marcinkowski didn’t move. Neither did the Galaxy back line. They had no answer for the sharpness of the pass or the calmness of the finish.

Edwin Cerrillo’s yellow on 36 minutes for a lunge on Brazilian Helinho summed it up: frustrated, reactive, behind.

The second goal was beautifully simple. Angulo released Paulinho on the counter in the 43rd minute, and the Brazilian finished calmly. Two nil. Game, you thought, over.

Greg Vanney’s changes helped, for a while. Marco Reus came on in the 58th minute and, within nine minutes, flipped the match.

Gabriel Pec (another Brazilian) made it 2-1 on 66 minutes from a tight angle, assisted by Reus. Then, after Paulinho restored the cushion for Toluca, Reus himself scored on 77 minutes, set up by Julián Aude. 3-2. Game on, or so it seemed.

Toluca didn’t panic. They held their shape, kept their composure, and in the 85th minute, Paulinho sealed it, right place, right time. 4-2. Clinical. Cold-blooded.

The Galaxy will be disappointed, not because they were outclassed, but because they got close and could not finish the job. Reus changed the game. Toluca changed it back.

Toluca look like a team that knows exactly what it is doing in this competition: organized, sharp in transition, technically secure. Four goals from open play, all with purpose.

A proper night’s work for Toluca, and four goals to take to Carson in a week’s time
