May 2 – The Football Federation of Albania (FSHF) and the Municipality of Kavaja have combined to rebuild the Besa Stadium in Kavaja that was destroyed by an earthquake in November 2019. The FSHF and the municipality will jointly provide the funding, with the stadium to be completed within two years.
The new stadium will have a capacity of 8,000 seats and will meet UEFA category 4 standards, the FSHF announced.
The Besa Stadium has not been operational since since the earthquake that killed 51 people and injured more than 3,000.
“We held a meeting regarding the approval of the project ideas for the construction of the Kavaja city stadium. It is known that the Kavaja city stadium was damaged by the earthquake and as a result was completely destroyed. We have decided that in cooperation with the Municipality of Kavaja, we will rebuild the city stadium, giving the city a category 4 stadium, according to UEFA’s definitions. The capacity of this stadium will be 8,000 spectators and will host matches of any category, with the exception of the finals that require a larger capacity,” said Arben Dervishaj, vice president of the Albanian Football Federation.
The have been approved on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Besa club.
This is good news for all Besa team sports fans. We hope to advance as soon as possible, so that we can start the works and within 2 years, the city of Kavaja will have a stadium and a new development pole. The stadium that we are building will not only have sports functions, but also functions for the city. Just as the ‘Arena Kombëtare’ stadium became a pole for Tirana, I believe the Kavaja stadium will do the same,” added Dervishaj.
