Police seize Maradona’s medical records as trial of his healthcare team continues

May 9 – More than four years after Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, the investigation into his death continues with dramatic new developments. Police recently conducted an overnight raid at a Buenos Aires clinic, seizing Maradona’s complete medical records following a court order as the trial of seven healthcare professionals moves forward.

The central figure in the trial is neurosurgeon Leonardo Luque, who served as Maradona’s personal physician during the final four years of his life.

Six other healthcare professionals face charges alongside Luque: Psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, who prescribed Maradona’s medication until his death, psychologist Carlos Díaz, Nancy Forlini, coordinator of the medical company hired during Maradona’s hospitalization, Mariano Perroni, representative of the nursing service company, Doctor Pedro Di Spagna, who monitored Maradona’s treatment and Nurse Ricardo Almirón

In recent testimony, Pablo Dimitroff, medical director of the Los Olivos clinic, stated that Maradona’s surgery proceeded without complications. Maradona was in intensive care from November 4-11, 2020, before being transferred to a private residence for recovery, where he later died.

Authorities report securing approximately 275 pages of archives and 547 emails exchanged between the medical professionals on trial. The proceedings are ongoing.

When news of Maradona’s death broke, Argentina plunged into profound grief. The government declared three days of national mourning, and thousands of fans gathered at the presidential palace where his body lay in state, waiting hours in line to pay their respects. Many wept openly in the streets, draped in Argentine flags or wearing jerseys bearing his iconic number 10.

“It felt like losing a family member,” recalled one fan who had camped overnight to view Maradona’s casket. “He wasn’t just a footballer – he was Argentina itself.”

In Naples, Italy, where Maradona led Napoli to unprecedented success, the city renamed its stadium ‘Stadio Diego Armando Maradona’ within days of his passing. Meanwhile, in Argentina, murals depicting the soccer legend proliferated across the country, transforming urban landscapes into vibrant tributes to their fallen hero.
