June 2 – Japan’s J.League has agreed a climate action partnership with Tokyu Real Estate. The agreement centres on Tokyu’s renewable energy initiative, ReENE, and aligns with the league’s wider ambition to address climate change through football while supporting regional revitalisation efforts across Japan.
ReENE, Tokyu Real Estate’s renewable energy platform, operates more than 150 projects nationwide with a combined output of nearly 2,000 megawatts. It also engages in regional development through environmental education and local energy solutions.
The J.League said it saw strong synergy in this mission, particularly as it seeks to deepen its role in community development and promote sustainability through its clubs and fanbase.
The partnership falls under the J.League Climate Action Partner programme, launched in 2023 with the slogan ‘A Good Pass to the Future Earth’. The programme was created to drive greater environmental responsibility within Japanese football by involving local governments, clubs, businesses, and supporters in long-term climate-focused initiatives.
As part of the agreement, J.League alumni, employees from Tokyu Real Estate, and staff from ReENE will co-host environmental education classes for upper elementary school students starting in autumn 2025.
These sessions will offer interactive learning experiences on climate change and sustainability, designed to inspire behavioural change and greater environmental consciousness from a young age. The collaboration will also involve national-level environmental awareness campaigns and explore the potential for J.League stadiums to be powered by renewable energy generated by ReENE.
Further initiatives under the partnership will be announced as planning progresses. Together, the J.League and Tokyu Real Estate aim to harness the power of football and clean energy to shape a more sustainable and socially connected future for communities throughout Japan.
Keisuke Nishida (pictured right), managing executive officer, Tokyu Real Estate, said: “We are proud to have signed a J.League Climate Action Partner agreement, in full support of the league’s climate strategy and its strong regional engagement across Japan. Through our renewable energy initiative, ReENE, Tokyu Real Estate is committed to addressing key social challenges – from achieving a decarbonised society and promoting regional symbiosis, to improving Japan’s energy self-sufficiency.
“In particular, as we expand our renewable energy projects using local resources, we see it as our responsibility to help revitalise communities nationwide. Sharing the J.League’s dual ambition of climate action and regional development, we look forward to working together on a range of initiatives, including environmental education, to help build a more sustainable future.”
Takayuki Tsujii (pictured left) Executive Officer, J.League (Sustainability Lead) added: “We’re grateful for the support of Tokyu Real Estate and its ReENE renewable energy business as an official J.League Climate Action Partner. As we join the Sport Positive Leagues next season, key themes like renewable energy and environmental education will be essential pillars of our sustainability efforts. This partnership – between Tokyu Real Estate, ReENE, the J.League and our clubs – represents an important step forward. Together, we aim to promote renewable energy and deliver impactful education that empowers the next generation and supports a more sustainable society.”
