Atlético Madrid boldly go where no football club has gone before

June 6 – Space: the final frontier. And apparently, the next logical destination for Atlético Madrid’s membership drive given their lack of silverware this season.

The Spanish club has launched the ‘Atleti Red & White’ card, an international membership programme designed to capture rojiblanco supporters “outside of Spain and outer space.” Because why limit yourself to terrestrial fans when the universe is your oyster?

In a move that would make Captain Kirk proud, Atlético has established what they claim is football’s first interstellar supporters club. The “space club” is officially headquartered – on paper, naturally – in a star located in the Ursa Major constellation (RA 08h35m43.622 +52°24’59.20″). It’s a symbolic gesture meant to convey that “no distance is too far for passion” however with Marcos Llorente’s penalty miss versus Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League still travelling, that motto carries a hint of truth.

This cosmic venture fits perfectly with Atlético’s self-image as football’s most innovative pioneers – always light-years ahead when it comes to connecting with new supporters. The €20 annual membership includes:

  • A store voucher refund (because even space fans appreciate a good deal)
  • A limited-edition welcome kit delivered after your first purchase
  • Entry into a draw to attend a match at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano
  • Access to special offers, international campaigns, and exclusive content
  • A dedicated microsite at www.atletispacesupporters.club

The space club launch coincides with the FIFA Club World Cup, though space enthusiasts will be disappointed to learn Atlético won’t be playing in Houston – missing a prime opportunity for NASA crossover marketing. To compensate, official NASA patch designer Tim Gagnon has created a custom mission patch for the club.

“Our fans always carry the club with them – whether on Earth or beyond,” Atlético’s statement noted. One can only hope they won’t encounter any “problems” during the Cup – like colliding into the asteroid known as Real Madrid.
