Spanish disability campaigners have big problem with Lamine Yamal’s birthday party

July 16 – Lamine Yamal might be the hottest property on the pitch in world football, but Barcelona’s teenage sensation has found himself in scalding water off it after his 18th birthday bash landed him in potential legal trouble.

The Spain winger’s weekend celebration at a rented gaff in Olivella – a sleepy town 50 kilometres northwest of Barcelona – has sparked a government investigation after allegations emerged about the party’s entertainment choices.

It’s claimed Yamal hired performers with dwarfism for the mafia-themed do, attended by YouTubers, influencers and several Barca teammates. The Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE) has branded this “unacceptable in the 21st century” and filed a legal complaint.

Adding fuel to the fire, model Claudio Calvo has alleged Yamal paid for 12 women with “certain breast measurements” to attend the shindig. Whether that’s true or tabloid tittle-tattle remains to be seen.

Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has now asked prosecutors to investigate whether disability rights laws were breached. The ADEE isn’t pulling punches either, claiming the entertainment choices “perpetuate stereotypes, fuel discrimination, and undermine the image and rights” of people with disabilities.

“These actions violate not only current legislation but also the fundamental ethical values of a society that seeks to be egalitarian and respectful,” they said in a statement, citing laws that prohibit shows where disabled people are used to “provoke mockery, ridicule, or derision.”

But here’s where it gets interesting. One of the entertainers who was actually there has hit back, defending Yamal in an interview with Spanish radio station RAC1.

“No-one disrespected us, we worked in peace,” said the performer, who chose to remain anonymous. “I don’t understand why there’s so much hype. We’re normal people, who do what we want, in an absolutely legal way.”

The entertainer described an hour-long performance involving dancing, drink distribution and magic tricks, after which they joined the party as guests. “Everyone had a great time,” they insisted.

“We know what our limit is and we will never exceed it: we are not fairground monkeys.”

It’s a messy situation for football’s golden boy, whose rise from La Masia graduate to Euros winner has been nothing short of meteoric. Now he’s learning the hard way that fame comes with scrutiny – and 18th birthday parties are no exception.
