Benfica unveil plans for Estádio da Luz redevelopment

July 23 – Benfica has revealed plans for the major redevelopment of Estádio da Luz, aiming to transform the Lisbon stadium into a modern, multi-use destination for sport, entertainment and community life. Designed by Populous, in collaboration with Lisbon-based Saraiva + Associados, the masterplan will reshape both the stadium and its surrounding area.

New development includes a 10,000-capacity indoor arena for concerts, esports and sporting events, along with two new indoor halls for basketball, volleyball and boxing. A 25×25 metre community pool will also be added, alongside a rooftop football pitch and running track to encourage community fitness use.

Estádio da Luz itself will be modernised with a sweeping range of tech upgrades, headlined by new programmable LED lighting which will enhance the matchday atmosphere and enabling the venue to adapt to other events.

A fourth level will be added outside the seating bowl, creating an extra 6,800 square metres for club offices, commercial space and expanded hospitality.

At the heart of the redesign is a new fan plaza, which will be able to host over 10,000 fans and include a DJ deck, alongside a host of other leisure amenities. The statue of Eusébio, who currently occupies said area, will be moved to a new location at the entrance to welcome supporters.

“This is an ambitious and strategic project, focused on our members, fans, and the continued growth of the club,” said Benfica president Rui Costa. “It is a project in the true Benfica spirit – one that enhances the competitive environment, deepens the club experience, and welcomes all those who want to experience what it means to be part of the Chama Imensa.”

Sustainability has been touted as a core element of the redesign, with plans to install solar panels, green roofs and rainwater harvesting systems, along with ecological landscaping.

Populous senior principal Tom Jones said: “Estádio da Luz will not just be a home for Benfica’s proud history, but a catalyst for its vibrant future.” Jorge Betancor, the firm’s Portugal lead, added that the project “aligns Benfica with top developments like Wembley and the Etihad, and sets a benchmark as Portugal prepares to co-host the 2030 World Cup.”

Construction is expected to start within the next few weeks.
