Amazon creates data-driven Prime Vision simulcast for Champions League

September 18 – The UEFA Champions League is back, and with it comes a dramatic shift in how we can consume the best football on the planet. Amazon Prime Video, fresh from signing a three-year, £450 million deal, will broadcast 17 games a season and for the first time, viewers can experience Prime Vision, a broadcast feed straight out of a video game.

The new platform debuted in North London, when Spurs, fresh from winning the Europa League and back in the Champions League for the first time since 2023, faced off against Villarreal. The match was free to anyone with a Prime subscription, but the real story was the data revolution being piped into living rooms.

Amazon has already perfected real time analytics with its NFL coverage, which are now considered a necessary part of the game especially amongst fantasy players and gamblers. Expect player name bars reminiscent of EA Sports FC, alongside numbers for sprint speed, pass distance, shot velocity, even jump height. Add in xG, xPass, and xSave, and you’ve got an on-screen computer that tells you not just what’s happening but predicting in real time what just might happen next.

An AI-led algorithm will recognize momentum shifts and the probability of a team scoring within 10 seconds. Want to watch like a coach? A tactical map showing all 22 players in real time will be at your fingertips.

Football is becoming increasingly defined not just by moments of brilliance, but by data points and percentages. Old timers and purists will scoff, but the nerds and data boffins will embrace it.

The Champions League has always been a stage for drama. Now, thanks to Amazon, it’s also a laboratory.
