Stéfano Di Carlo elected River Plate chairman and promises to improve results

November 3 – Stéfano Di Carlo, 36, has been elected the new chairman of Buenos Aires giants River Plate after defeating his rivals in a vote.

A businessman, Di Carlo will be the youngest president of River Plate in 92 years. He received 61.77% of the vote in club elections, defeating his opponents Carlos Trillo (16.22%), Luis Belli (9.68%), Daniel Kiper (8.29%) and Pablo Lunati (4%) by a wide margin.

“We also understand the weight and significance of River’s democratic life,” said Di Carlo at a news conference, as reported by La Nacion. “For over 100 years, River members have been electing their fellow members as club officials. In that sense, we understand not only the weight of history, but also the profound sense of responsibility involved in managing what belongs to all River members and fans.”

He succeeds outgoing president Jorge Brito. Di Carlo is the grandson of former River president Osvaldo ‘Titi’ Di Carlo. He also has ties to ex-River president Rodolfo D’Onofri and served as vice-president between 2018 and 2021.

Di Carlo’s first task will be to steer the club to renewed sporting success. River have failed to win a single title during Marcelo Gallardo’s second spell as coach.

They crashed out of both the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Argentina. The club can still win the Liga Profesional de Fútbol’s Clausura title. F

“Football is the most central, relevant, and important issue for us and the entire River Plate family, so we are going to conduct the necessary evaluations to continue improving,” said Di Carlo.
