SuperSport secures AFCON 2026 broadcast rights and plans dedicated channel

November 7 – The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) and broadcaster SuperSport have agreed a deal for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in English and local languages across Sub-Saharan Africa.

SuperSport will rebrand one of its channels for AFCON. The channel will feature live match coverage, expert analysis, top African football legends, and multilingual commentary. The terms of the deal between CAF and Supersport were not disclosed.

In a statement, CANAL+ Africa CEO, David Mignot, said: “Our newly formed merger with the MultiChoice Group has already unlocked opportunities and benefits for our customers. The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is a great demonstration of this ambition -bringing together our expertise to offer unprecedented coverage and bring fans closer to the game.”

SuperSport is owned by MultiChoice which was acquired by French-based media giant Canal+ in a deal worth $1.9 billion. SuperSport has traditionally been the home of the Premier League, rugby and cricket, with less attention paid to the African game.

The broadcaster held the rights for the last Africa Cup of Nations, but only after MultiChoice reluctantly acquired the rights and stepped up on the eve of the tournament. With Bafana Bafana’s good run and third-place finish in the Ivory Coast, SuperSport enjoyed strong ratings and advertisement revenues.

CAF boss Patrice Motsepe said: “The AFCON in Morocco will showcase world-class football, as good as the best anywhere in the world. This partnership supports our vision to make African football commercially sustainable, to invest in our youth, and to unite the continent. We are in a golden era. African football is growing, and the world is watching.”
