O’Neill back to save Celtic again after Nancy sacking

January 6 – Martin O’Neill is back at Celtic for the second time this season after the sacking of Wilfried Nancy, in a move he admits feels “a wee bit strange.”

The 73-year-old first stepped in for eight games in the wake of Brendan Rodgers’ exit in October, winning seven of those.

He then made way for Nancy in December but the Frenchman was axed on Monday after a dismal run of just two wins from eight matches.

O’Neill, 73, will now be back in the dugout for Saturday’s home game with Dundee United and will continue in the role for the rest of the season.

He told CelticTV: “I used the phrase restoration of confidence when I first came in and I suppose that will be the message again.

“The players can play. The lovely thing about it is that players you know are very fine footballers can come back and play in the manner they have done in the past.

“We know we are in a big, big fight. We’re going to try and win the league, and it won’t be easy. We have to be up to the challenge.”

Celtic parted ways with Nancy after Saturday’s 3–1 defeat by Rangers, his sixth loss in just eight matches.

That ended his brief 33-day reign in charge, the shortest managerial spell in Celtic’s history.

Celtic have also removed Paul Tisdale from his role as Head of Football Operations, along with Nancy’s coaching staff.
