February 25 – Celebrity ownership of English football clubs has been growing, but few arrivals have the pulling power of American rapper and entrepreneur, Snoop Dogg.
Snoop is a minority investor in Swansea City AFC, and made his first appearance at the Swansea.com stadium last night when the Swans hosted Preston North End in the Championship, drawing 1-1.
Fittingly, Snoop wants to inject some American razzamatazz into the proceedings and asked the Jack Army to welcome him with a pre-match towel twirl similar to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL with their ‘terrible towels’. A move well practiced by the Dogg, who is a huge Steelers fan.
A pre-match post on Swansea’s official X account read: “Snoop Dogg is asking the Jack Army to join him in a pre-match towel twirl this evening. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats 20 minutes before kick-off, and to twirl the towels as Snoop walks on the pitch.”
Swansea’s ownership group also includes American television personality Martha Stewart and Croatian international Luka Modrić. This Celebrity ownership brings attention and global reach, in a similar vein to Swansea’s big Welsh rivals, Wrexham, and the Hollywood pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Snoop’s relationship with Swansea has been long-distance up until this point, saying: “I know it has been a long time coming, but I cannot wait to finally make my first visit to Swansea,” he said on the club’s official website. “From the moment we talked about me becoming an owner, I have been looking forward to the chance to be with you all at the Swansea.com Stadium.
“I have heard so many great things about the atmosphere, especially when we play under the lights. When I watched the Wrexham game, where we showed we are the capital of Welsh football, the noise in the stadium sounded incredible even from over 5,000 miles away. I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
On March 13, the Swans visit the Red Dragons, where music and food meet Tinsel Town. Expect lights, cameras, and plenty of action.
