Wembley to debut its new safe-standing areas for Carabao Cup final this month

March 11 – The EFL Cup Final between Arsenal and Manchester City on March 22 will mark a significant shift in the way supporters experience matches at Wembley Stadium.

For the first time on this scale, safe standing will be in operation at the national stadium after around 10,000 rail seats were installed over the winter period of inactivity. The upgrade has created the largest safe-standing area currently in British football.

The rail seating is positioned in the upper tiers on the east and west sides of the ground, enabling both sets of fans at a match to have the opportunity to stand.

The FA said that each position includes a fold-down seat with a waist-high rail in front, allowing supporters to stand safely during matches while maintaining the structure of an all-seater stadium when required.

The installation follows earlier safe-standing trials at Wembley and across several top-flight grounds since the UK government eased the long-standing all-seater policy in 2022.

The change came after years of lobbying from supporter groups who argued that properly designed rail seating could improve atmosphere without compromising safety – at a time where ticket prices and tourism spikes are frankly hurting the British football matchday reputation.

The Carabao Cup final will be the system’s first major test at Wembley.

The new areas will also be in operation during the upcoming international break when England host friendlies against Uruguay and Japan as warm-up games for the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer.
